Explore Prehistoric Badenoch: Delfour Ring Cairn and Alvie Estate

Organised by Badenoch Heritage: Bringing the Past to the 21st Century Project

Walk back in time to Easter Delfour Ring Cairn and Alvie Estate with Dr Oliver O’Grady VABS Project Officer and David Kinnear Alvie Estate Factor. This guided tour starts at Kingussie where a minibus will transport you to the Alvie Estate. Enjoy this easy grade walking tour of the fascinating historic landscape of Alvie Estate led by authorities on Scotland's archaeology and the history of this diverse Badenoch estate. The tour will involve minibus transport between sites and short sections of walking around the estate and will last approximately 4 hours (including return trip to Kingussie). Your experience begins with a bespoke tour of historic Alvie House and this picturesque working rural estate that is managed along the principles of diversification. We culminate with a special visit to the 4000-year old Bronze Age ring cairn and standing stone at Easter Delfour that shows the extraordinary roots of life in Badenoch. This ancient burial cairn was previously surrounded by a stone circle and is a type special to the Highlands of Scotland around Strathspey and Inverness. Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Time: 4 hours. Grade: Easy walk (not all sections are fully accessible)
