A Northern Pictish Powerhouse: Excavations at Burghead 2015-20

Talk by Professor Gordon Noble (University of Aberdeen)

Since 2015 the University of Aberdeen has been investigating the 5.5ha promontory fort at Burghead. The excavations to date have revealed numerous early medieval buildings, some of the best preserved timber-laced ramparts in Europe and a sequence of activity from the 6^th to the 10^th century AD. This talk will summarise progress to date and begin to contextualise this major centre in relation to early medieval history, the character of the architecture, the early medieval economy and the demise of the site towards the end of the first millennium AD.

Professor Gordon Noble, University of Aberdeen,  is currently working on two major projects: The Northern Picts looking at post-Roman societies of northern Britain, and Comparative Kingship examining early royal landscapes of Ireland and Scotland. He has undertaken fieldwork in Highland, Moray and Aberdeenshire.
