Talk: Jacobites by Name [Inverness]

19 April 2016, Starts: 13:00, Ends: 14:00

Jacobites By Name
A lunchtime lecture by artist Calum Colvin

Room to Discover, Inverness Museum. Organised by Inverness Museum and Art Gallery

In this talk Calum Colvin will discuss the ideas and concerns behind his most recent body of work, ‘Jacobites by Name’, selected pieces from which will be on show at IMAG from Tuesday 5 April – Saturday 7 May. This work investigates the traces of Jacobite material culture, portraiture and visual illusion to be found in Scottish museums up and down the country. Colvin’s work takes a fresh look at this material and re-interprets the matrix of symbols and allusions that they carry and, through a range of different types of contemporary making, brings them into the digital age.

Born in Glasgow in 1961, Calum Colvin is Professor of Fine Art Photography at Dundee University. His artworks are held in numerous collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Museum of Fine Art, Houston; The Victoria and Albert Museum, London and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, in Edinburgh, where he lives. A practitioner of both sculpture and photography, Colvin brings these disciplines together in his unique style of ‘constructed photography’: assembled tableaux of objects, which are then painted and photographed.
