This will be a lively evening of music and song, with excerpts from Mrs Grant's 'Letters from the Mountains' read throughout the evening by Mary Stewart.

Anne MacVicar was born in Glasgow in 1755, but spent her childhood in America, with her mother and father. On their return to Scotland in 1768 the family settled in Fort Augustus. Here Anne met and married the Rev. James Grant of Strathspey in 1779.  Her young husband had been appointed to the charge of parish minister in Laggan and they set up home in a small cottage at Gaskbeg farm and lived in the parish for some 22 years.Five children were born in the early years of the marriage, another seven to follow. Sadly, three of the youngest died of measles. From the letters Anne wrote to friends at this time, (later to be published as Letters from the Mountains), there emerges a picture of the places and people among whom shelived. In 1801 Anne's husband died suddenly leaving her with eight children and a burden of debt. Friends persuaded her to publish the letters sent in her time in Laggan.  In 1806 the book 'Letters from the Mountains' appeared and was an instant success.
