Corrugated Iron Vernacular Buildings in the Highlands

Talk by Graham Clark

Dingwall Community Centre. Organised by ARCH. Suggested donation £3

The processes of corrugating and galvanising wrought iron sheets into strong, durable, lightweight and readily transportable building materials were developed in 1829-37. They sparked off a 100-year world-wide boom in pre-fabricated corrugated iron buildings. Nowadays, the visible legacy is fast-disappearing or dilapidating but, as illustrated in this talk by Graham Clark, a surprising variety of fine corrugated iron buildings are still standing throughout the Highlands.
