Course: Introduction to Nautical Archaeology [Edinburgh]
21 January 2011
Introductino to Nautical Archaeology
Headland Archaeology Offices
Edinburgh
The Introduction Course is a one day course which offers an Introduction to nautical and underwater archaeology and costs £55. The course looks at some basic archaeological principles and then moves on to look at how we might go about recording and surveying sites both underwater and on the foreshore, introducing some 2D survey methods. You will put these into practice with a dry practical exercises.
If you are a diver the day will conclude with a swimming pool dive in order to practice the skills you will have learnt in an underwater environment. Can you and a buddy recreate the survey you have practiced on land once you cannot talk to one another!? If you are not a diver, don’t worry, nautical archaeology is not just underwater and is not just for divers. We are surrounded by the remains of our nautical past, whether it is ship remains on the foreshore, coastal defences or the remains of coastal industry. There is something for everyone. Whilst divers on the course will have the opportunity to practice skills in the swimming pool, those who are more interested in the remains above the water line will undertake a more complex survey exercise, building on the skills and abilities introduced earlier in the day.
The course is a fantastic way to learn more about archaeology and get more from your diving. Acting as the first step on the training ladder with the NAS it will allow you to take part in other courses, programmes and fieldwork projects. Why not check out some pictures of previous courses on our Training Pages on Flickr - http://www.flickr.com/photos/nastraining.
Group discounts are available, and under 16’s need to be accompanied by an adult. If you have any questions about the course, contact Mary Harvey or the Nautical Archaeology Society office.
