Morning – Graveyard Recording Skills Workshop 10.00am–12.30pmD rumbeg Village Hall
At Drumbeg Village Hall we’ll introduce the practical skills used to record historic burial grounds, including:
- describing and measuring memorial stones;
- transcribing inscriptions;
- archaeological photography;
- recognising different monument forms and materials;
- basic condition recording;
- using earlier records and family-history sources.
We’ll also look at previous recording undertaken at Nedd and across Sutherland and consider how our new work can build on that earlier research.
Afternoon – Practical Recording at Nedd Burial Ground
1.30pm - 4pmNedd Burial Ground
The afternoon provides an opportunity to put these skills into practice at Nedd Burial Ground.
Working in small supervised teams, participants will help Historic Assynt begin a modern, non-invasive photographic and descriptive record of selected memorials.
Activities will include:
- photography;
- measurement;
- inscription transcription;
- memorial description;
- visible condition recording.
No previous experience is needed and participation is free, but advance booking is essential.
Children and young people are welcome to attend with a responsible adult. Please note that the sessions are designed primarily for adults and older young people and involve detailed recording, measuring, photography and transcription. We won’t have separate activities or facilities for younger children, so families should consider whether the programme will be suitable for them.
