The Scotland´s Rural Past project will hold a two-day Historic Documents training course in Aberdeen on 8th & 9th December. The course will introduce participants
to the principal sources available for the study of deserted rural settlements in Scotland and how to access them, including:
Printed material
Maps and plans
Aerial photographs
Census records
Taxation records (including valuation rolls, hearth tax, poll tax, etc.)
Estate papers
On-line records and resources
The course is taught by a combination of lectures and a series of hands-on workshops based around specific case studies. During the workshop sessions, participants will work in pairs to research the history of a rural settlement using a range of material selected from the above list. The on-line records and resources session also gives each participant the opportunity to explore the wide range of on-line resources available for local history research. In addition to
this, there will be opportunities for participants to raise questions and discuss issues relating to their own particular research interests.
The course is FREE and limited funding is available towards the cost of travel and accommodation expenses where necessary.
If you are interested in attending, please contact SPR at srp@rcahms.gov.uk by Monday 1st November. They will allocate places and contact all applicants by Friday 5th November. Course numbers are limited to sixteen and if over-subscribed, preference will be given to those who are already participating in an SRP project.
This is the last opportunity to attend this very popular course before SRP ends in September 2011, so please do apply if you think you will find it useful for any research or recording projects that you are involved with or planning for the future.
