Iona Research Conference [Iona] ...

10 April 2012

Historic Scotland and the Iona Community will together host a research workshop on April 10th to 12th which aims to add to our understanding of this hugely significant religious site and its collection of intricately carved stones.

The research will inform planning of events in 2013 marking the 1450th anniversary of St Columba’s arrival in 563 AD.

The conference will bring together contributions on a range of topics:

* Was art and monasticism in Iona influenced by Ireland, Norway or further afield?
* How and where was Iona influential?
* What was the form of the Columban and later monastic settlements?
* What do the carved stones tell us?
* What was the spiritual and architectural development of the abbey and nunnery?
* What were the lay influences on the site, and the impacts of the Reformation?
* How has restoration/ reuse in the 20th century changed perspectives on heritage?

It will also aim to refine a Draft Research Framework and to obtain stakeholder views on Interim Statements of Cultural Significance for the Abbey and for the Nunnery, St Ronan’s Church and Maclean’s Cross.

Conference fee £50, not including accomodation (£30 students).
