Dig: Birnie, near Elgin ...

Final season of the dig at Birnie, near Elgin, where an impressive iron and Pictish settlement site has been the subject of assessment and excavation since 1998, led by Fraser Hunter of the National Museums of Scotland. The site was a local power centre which has produced a rich range of buildings and finds.

Volunteers are welcome, as long as they commit to a miniumum of 3 days. The excavations take place Sunday through Friday, with no work on Saturdays. Open day at Birnie near Elgin ...

Open day at Birnie, near Elgin with guided tours and various craft activities. This is the last year of the excavation, and well worth visiting!

The excavations at Birnie near Elgin are having their annual Open Day on Sunday 12th September. See the latest discoveries, tour the site, and have fun with Iron Age arts and crafts.

Adult Tours: 10am, 12pm, 2pm, and 4pm
Children's Tours: 11am, 1pm, 3pm
No booking required - just turn up.

Excavation: Craggie Bloomery [Sutherland] ...

Forestry Commission Scotland plan to run a small exploratory excavation at Craggie in Glen Oykel (NC 33617 05152). The dig will be supervised by John Atkinson of GUARD and overseen by Matt Ritchie of FCS. They are looking for volunteers for the long weekend of 10th -13th September. There will be an open day for Scottish Archaeology Month on Saturday the 10th. No experience necessary
