‘Taking part in the Past’

This weekend will introduce you to the methods of recording a standing building. This technique is used by archaeologists as well as architects and historians to record every detail of a historic building, its dimensions, building materials, changes over time, internal fixtures and fittings. As well as the buildings themselves we look at the evidence of old maps, other historic documents and oral traditions.

We have been given permission to carry out a survey of the Home Farm next to the camp site. This is one of the earliest designed farm complexes on the west coast, dating to the early 19th century. A building survey will record the ground plan of the buildings to enable us to compare this with designs used by the Sutherland estate around the same time. We can identify and record modifications to the buildings which reflect changing farming methods over nearly 200 years, and a complete photographic survey will produce a record for posterity, whatever the future holds for the farm.

Access and ability: easy access and there’ll be something for everyone to do, from holding tapes to sketching and taking photos.
